Create a Timeless, Thoughtful Home with Leah & Fliss of Bone Made
We chat with Leah and Fliss of Interior Design & Styling Studio, Bone Made to discover their wisdom for styling a timeless and authentic home that is inspired by nature.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO START YOUR INTERIOR DESIGN & STYLING STUDIO, BONE MADE?
We both have Interior Design backgrounds and have our own very unique design journeys which have paved our way to us working together. The way Bone Made came about is Fliss was about to go on maternity leave with her first baby and I was feeling a little unmotivated and uninspired in the styling/design role I was currently working in. We were both craving a little extra creativity so decided that perhaps we work on some private design projects together. It started off quite slow (as Fliss was a new Mum) but we began to take on family and friends' projects and learnt how to work with each other and began to establish a strong aesthetic and brand. From here the opportunities grew organically and before we knew it, we had a studio in Sydney and were both working in our business full time.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR OWN INTERIOR DESIGN STYLE?
At Bone Made we make a strong effort to design to each client’s individual brief and design style. We capture this look and enhance it by designing and creating earthy, sophisticated spaces with an emphasis on timeless and considered design. We each have our own personal styles though which we feel bring a balance to all our designs for our clients.
Leah - My style I feel is constantly evolving and changing (the beauty of being a Gemini). However, I do have a strong appreciation for refined classic details, muted and subdued finishes and colour palettes, with a hint of black for contrast. I also love statement styling elements like an oversized mirror, statement art, rugs or lamps to really finish off a space.
Fliss – My own personal taste and design style would be drawn from nature and it's earthy colour palettes, textures and forms. I feel my relaxed and easy-going nature depicts the joinery design, materials, colours + styling selections of my style. Think ‘clean lined coastal cottage’.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE MAKES A SPACE TIMELESS AND AUTHENTIC?
Every home or space is so different and displays its own characteristics so we feel its vital to pay homage to this as much as possible. When specifying and sourcing, we like to avoid 'trends' as much as possible and opt for timeless elements which we know will stand the test of time and not quickly date.
WE'RE ALL ABOUT CREATING A SPACE THAT INSPIRES YOU TO COME HOME TO NATURE. WHAT ARE SOME WAYS THAT YOU ACHIEVE THIS IN YOUR OWN HOME?
We describe our design aesthetic as 'earthy and sophisticated'. We love a natural earthy approach to our finishes and colour palettes, opting for subdued tones and texture which allows a sense of comfort and serenity. We also follow a 'less is more' approach and have a strong appreciation for minimalism. Where we can, we will always introduce natural materials as well as place an emphasis on lots of beautiful natural light.
WHICH TOTEM ROAD PIECE IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND HOW WOULD YOU STYLE IT?
We love the Luxa Round Coffee Table. We love natural oak and feel this style and shape is timeless and so versatile to work in to various design styles.
WHY DO YOU BELIEVE CHOOSING SUSTAINABLE FURNITURE PIECES IS IMPORTANT?
Pending the clients' budget, we will always choose local, Australian made furniture as well as propose custom joinery for a bespoke, personalised design. It allows longevity in items and we find clients' want to ensure they have a lighter footprint by making sustainable and more environmentally friendly choices within their homes.
WHAT EXCITING THINGS DO YOU HAVE ON THE HORIZON?
We have just expanded our team! We welcomed beautiful Teagan into our studio at the end of last year and have lots of very exciting projects on the horizon for 2021, including a farm house project in Byron Bay Hinterland which we are loving working on!
I am also about to embark on motherhood in the next couple of weeks which is exciting for myself and a new juggle with Bone Made.
