Debunking 5 Myths About Natural Stone In Your Home

Natural stone has been used in homes for thousands of years. It is strong, timeless and deeply connected to nature. Yet despite its long history, natural stone dining tables are often misunderstood.

Some people assume stone feels cold, difficult to care for or too traditional for modern interiors. In reality, natural stone is one of the most enduring and versatile materials you can bring into a home.

In this journal, we explore five myths about natural stone dining tables, revealing why these elegant surfaces continue to inspire designers and homeowners alike. Camilla Ingall, Interior Designer from Unfolded, also shares her take on why and how we should live with natural stone in our homes.

Stop Believing These 5 Myths

Myth 1: Natural Stone Dining Tables Look Dated

Natural stone is sometimes associated with traditional interiors, but in reality it works beautifully in modern spaces. Carrara marble is a perfect example. With its soft white base and gentle grey veining, Carrara has a quiet elegance that complements many interior styles.

Travertine is valued for its warm earthy tones and subtle natural texture, bringing a softer and more organic feel to a dining space. Its palette ranges from soft ivory to sandy beige, pairing effortlessly with timber, linen and other natural materials.

Camilla notes, "I'm always drawn to materials that feel honest and grounded, and natural stone does hat without trying too hard. There’s a depth and variation to natural stone that you just can’t replicate, and it instantly brings a sense of calm into a space.”

Myth 2: Natural Stone Dining Tables Feel Too Cold

Stone naturally feels cool to the touch, but it quickly adjusts to the temperature of the room. In warmer climates this can actually feel refreshing. More importantly, the overall feeling of a dining space comes from the materials around it. Soft seating, natural textiles, warm lighting and timber elements all help bring balance and warmth.

Camilla explains, “If you are deliberate with your selections, it works with everything around it rather than competing. It’s also a great opportunity to bring in character.”

Myth 3: Natural Stone Dining Tables Aren’t Practical

Natural stone is incredibly durable, which is why it has been used in architecture and kitchens for generations. With simple everyday care, stone dining tables work beautifully for daily life.

Like many natural materials, stone develops character over time. Small variations and subtle changes are part of what make it feel authentic and lived in.

I think people hear “stone” and immediately think high maintenance or something they need to be careful around. I always say, it’s actually the opposite. Natural stone is made to be lived with, not tiptoed around.” Camilla says.

Myth 4: All Natural Stone Dining Tables Look the Same

One of the most beautiful qualities of natural stone is that every slab is different.

Veining, colour and texture form naturally over time, creating patterns that can never be replicated. Some slabs have soft flowing movement while others reveal stronger natural lines and mineral detail. This natural variation means every stone dining table is completely unique.

For many people, this individuality is exactly what makes stone furniture so special. As Camilla reflects, “A more expressive stone with stronger veining can completely elevate a space… it becomes less about being ‘perfect’ and more about creating something with personality.”

Myth 5: Natural Stone Dining Tables Are High Maintenance

Natural stone is often thought of as easily damaged, but it is actually very durable and designed to be lived with. Modern sealers help reduce the likelihood of staining and make everyday care even easier. With a few simple habits such as wiping spills, natural stone dining tables remain practical and durable for everyday life.

Travertine in particular is appreciated for how easy it is to live with. Its natural texture and warm tones help it wear beautifully over time, making small marks or subtle variations feel like part of the material’s character rather than flaws.

“If you’re looking for something that stays completely perfect forever, stone might not be your material", Camilla explains. “But if you’re open to something that evolves with your home, then it’s a really beautiful choice.”

"Rather than seeing natural stone as something precious or out of reach, I like to position it as part of everyday life. It’s there to be used, to age, and to tell a bit of a story over time."

A Timeless Choice for the Home

Natural stone dining tables bring together durability, craftsmanship and natural beauty. Each piece carries its own story, shaped over thousands of years. The result is furniture that feels grounded, authentic and built to last. As Camilla puts it:

"Stone has been around for centuries, and it’s still one of the most relevant materials we use today.”

For homes that value natural materials and thoughtful design, a stone dining table becomes more than furniture. It becomes a place where everyday moments gather.
