Care Instructions

The quality and beauty of your Totem Road furniture can be easily maintained. If you follow these simple care instructions your furniture will maintain its natural beauty for decades to come.

TIMBER

With time, the patina (a finish that develops over time due to weather, stress and/or age) will develop and contribute to the natural beauty of the timber and the quality of your solid oak Totem Road furniture can easily be maintained with just a few considerations.

Spills + General Cleaning

Solid oak will absorb moisture over a few hours so it is recommended that any spills are wiped dry as soon as possible - this also includes the condensation from a glass. We recommend using placemats and trivets for extra protection.

When cleaning your solid oak, we first recommend a dry cotton cloth and if necessary, a damp cloth can be used. We advise against any type of chemical cleaning solution or solvent as our pieces are brushed and sealed with a natural one pack finish and the use of such products may damage this finish. Natural cleaners are able to be used but a damp cloth is preferred.

Moving Furniture

Majority of damage to furniture is when it is moved without care. Due to the solid construction of our pieces and therefore the weight, we strongly recommend using the supplied furniture glides on the feet of all Totem Road products. With large items (such as beds/large tables) we recommend lifting as opposed to dragging. Dragging can rip timber joints forcing them off kilter, ruin screw threads and lead to long term damage. When transporting furniture be sure to wrap and secure it well. And be mindful of the weight of our solid oak products when lifting and disassembling.

Squeaks + Loose Screws

Over time screws can slightly loosen and this may cause some pieces to seem wobbly or squeaky, but rest assured this is not a product fault. Using the supplied allen key, simply tighten the screws when need be.

Direct Sunlight + Air Conditioning

It’s preferable that solid oak furniture is not placed in direct sunlight or in the direct path of air conditioning systems where possible. The timber will naturally expand and contract, but sunlight and great variations in temperature & humidity will exacerbate this movement. This may potentially cause weak points or cracks. It’s important to note that cracks in the timber do not change the integrity of an item and over time, this may occur in solid timber pieces regardless of the placement within your space.

MARBLE

At Totem Road, we use Carrara Marble, a resource which comes straight from the earth, doesn’t require other resources to create it and of which, there is an abundant supply. Most importantly, Carrara Marble is timeless; exceptionally durable and if cared for, its lifespan is infinite.

Scratches + Chips

If scratches appear in any of our marble products, we recommend seeking advice or service from a professional, however they can be quite easily buffed out with some water and sandpaper. It’s best to avoid the situation by using placemats.

Chips in any marble pieces can be repaired, although they should be dealt with by a professional.

Spills + Spot Cleaning

Treat spills and stains as soon as possible using a damp cloth. If a stain persists, apply a ph-balanced scouring cleaner using a soft bristled brush. Do not use acidic cleaners.
